Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a standardized computer- based test that is owned and administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and can be considered as an important part of the admissions or selection process for many graduate schools in the United States, Canada, and a few other countries.
The GRE General Test aims to measure verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, and critical thinking skills that have been acquired over a long period of learning.
The Verbal Reasoning measure of the GRE General Test assesses an applicant’s ability to evaluate and analyze written materials and synthesize information obtained from it; analyze relationships among component parts of sentences including recognizing relationships among words and concepts. The Verbal Reasoning measure contains three types of questions: Reading Comprehension, Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence.
The Quantitative Reasoning measure (posed in either mathematical or real life settings) of the GRE General Test assesses an applicant’s ability of basic mathematical skills; understanding of elementary mathematical concepts and ability to reason quantitatively and to model and solve problems with quantitative methods. Topics revolves around arithmetic, geometry, algebra, data analysis etc.
The Analytical Writing measure of the GRE General Test, on the other hand, assesses an applicant’s ability of critical thinking and analytical writing skills by assessing one’s ability to articulate and support complex ideas; construct arguments and as well sustain a focused and coherent discussion. The Analytical Writing measure section consists of a 30-minute “Analyze an Issue” task which is known to present an opinion on an issue and instructions on how to respond. Applicants are required to evaluate the issue, consider its complexities and develop an argument with reasons and examples to support one’s views.
