A prominent member of “Russell Group” university, the N8 Group (8 most research intensive universities in Northern England), and the US- based Universities Research Association, the University of Manchester is United Kingdom’s 3rd largest public research university based in Manchester, England, with campus based in south Manchester City Center on Oxford Road. Also, considered a red brick university, the university is one of the leading universities of the UK and was formed from the merger of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) and the Victoria University of Manchester in the year 2004. The university has been in a way referred to as part of a “golden diamond” of research-intensive UK institution and is also the sixth largest research income of any English university.
The University of Manchester has been ranked 35th in the 2025-2026 QS World University Rankings. Nationally, the institution has been ranked 28th in 2025 by the Complete University Guide.
Manchester also has a strong record in terms of securing funding from the three main UK research councils, EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council), Medical Research Council (MRC) and Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).
