The Department of Home Affairs (DOHA), under the Skill Select model, based on the claims presented in their expression of interest (EOI), have made provisions as per the point-based system to invite skilled workers with in- demand occupations from all over the world to live and work permanently in Australia. Assessment of the eligibility are mostly based on the criteria like age, English language skills, employment experience, educational qualifications, and beyond. Higher the point scores, higher the chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA). Breakdown of how the points are awarded has been mentioned below.

Age- A maximum of 30 points is allocated for candidates who are at least 25 years of age and below 33 years of age, 25 points allocated for candidates who are at least 33 years of age and below 40 years of age, likewise, 25 points again for candidates who are at least 18 years of age but below 25 years of age, and 15 points reserved for candidates who are at least 40 years of age and below 45 years of age.

English language skills- A maximum of 20 points are reserved for candidates who possess “Superior English” (i.e. equivalent IELTS score of overall and each band 8.0), and 10 points for candidates possessing “Proficient English” (i.e. equivalent IELTS score of overall and each band 7.0)

Skilled employment experience- Australian skilled employment (in Australia)- A maximum of 20 points is reserved for candidates who have held at least 8 years of recognized employment that has been assessed by the assessing authority and nominated in the list of skilled occupation or a closely related skilled occupation that is consistent with a career advancement pathway. For any Australian employment, one must have held a substantive visa or a Bridging A or Bridging B visa and to be eligible for points, should have complied with the conditions of that visa. Likewise, 15 points are reserved for candidates who have employment experience above 5 years and below 8 years; 10 points for experience above 3 years and less than 5 years; and 5 points for the ones who have experience above 1 year and below 3 years. For Overseas skilled employment (outside Australia)– A maximum of 15 points is reserved for candidates who have at least 8 years of employment experience; 10 points for the applicants who have employment experience above 5 years and below 8 years, and, likewise, 5 points for the ones who have employment experience above 3 years and below 5 years.

Educational qualifications- A maximum of 20 points are allocated if one holds a standard recognized Doctorate degree from an Australian educational institution or a Doctorate from other educational institution. Similarly, 15 points are reserved for candidates who hold a Bachelor degree; 10 points for ones possessing an Australian educational institution-based diploma or a trade qualification, and likewise, 10 points if one may be have attained a qualification or award recognized by the relevant assessing authority for nominated skilled occupation as being suitable for that occupation. In case of an overseas qualification at a bachelor degree level and above, assessment of the comparative educational level of the qualifications obtained against the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) can be provided from Vocational Education Training and Assessment Services (VETASSESS) to support one’s claims for the points. 

Specialist educational qualifications- 10 points are allocated if the candidate holds a Master’s degree by research or a Doctorate degree from an Australian educational institution incorporating at least 2 academic years of study in a relevant science, engineering, technology, mathematics or specified information and communication technology (ICT) fields.

The Australian study requirement category provides 5 points if the candidate meets the requirement of possessing at least 1 degree, diploma or trade qualification from an Australian educational institution.

Professional year in Australia- 5 points are reserved for candidates who have completed a professional year either in the field of accounting, engineering, or ICT/ Computing and included in the nominated occupation or a closely related occupation in Australia. The conditions should also satisfy that the professional year be completed over a period of at least 12 months; completed in Australia in the four years before the candidate is invited to apply for a visa*; and provided by either the Australian Computer Society, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, CPA Australia, the Institute of Public Accountants (formerly the National Institute of Accountants) or the Engineers Australia.

Credentialled community language- A candidate will be eligible for 5 points if he/ she has held a recognized qualification in a credentialled community language accredited at the paraprofessional level or above, certified at the certified provisional level or above, or have a community language credential for interpreting or translating by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters.

Studying in regional Australia will help grant a candidate a maximum of 5 points if he/ she possesses at least 1 full time degree, a diploma or either a trade qualification from an Australian educational institution satisfying the criteria of Australian study requirement and had been obtained while living and studying in a designated campus area of regional Australia.

Partner skills will help grant 10 points if one’s partner is not an Australian permanent resident or an Australian citizen, but is an applicant for the same visa subclass. Additionally, evidence of invitation needs to be shown that when the main applicant was sent an invitation to apply for this visa, the conditions also satisfied that his/ her partner were under 45 years of age; possessed the ability to show competency in English; been in a nominated skilled occupation that is on the same skilled occupation list as the main applicant’s nominated skilled occupation; and possessed suitable skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority for their nominated skilled occupation (but not for a Subclass 485 visa).

Lastly, 5 points are reserved for “Nomination” if an applicant has been invited to apply for a Subclass 190 (Skilled — Nominated) visa and the nomination has not been withdrawn by the nominating State or Territory government agency.
